2nd Annual WHOLEBODY FOCUSING RETREAT in Northern California:
Playing it out together: soma-dramas as unfolding the body’s spirit
 with Glenn Fleisch

In every real man a child is hidden that wants to play. Friedrich Nietzsche

If you are sorcerer, life is art, poetry, and madness. You perform a script that is written as you act… a gift to be developed, an emergence of the spirit.  A. Mindell

Eros is the spirit of communication, relationship and love; it is also the spirit of play, and the poetry in vision. D. M. Levin

The world is a drama, staged in a dream. In a moment, the play is played out. Sri Guru Granth Sahib                            Let it come, let it play out its impetus or energy, then just let it go. Rinpoche

In letting it come, I allow my body-feel to stir, to move, to do whatever it does independently of my deliberate control….  E. Gendlin

  • Would you love to spend a few days in a beautiful setting, with wonderful Focusing people, all of us working and playing together?
  • Are you interested in embarking on an embodied journey with fellow Focusers, one in which we all participate in awakening the spirit of the living body?
  • Can you envision allowing your body’s energy to release itself from patterns of restraint as we play out the body’s underlying feelings, needs and desires?
  • Is there a desire to expand and deepen your WBF practice, one that includes awareness and expression of all somatic sensations, movements and impulses, as portal to the soul?

The essence of Wholebody Focusing in general, and the embodied practice of soma-dramas in particular, is to create a safe, sacred space in which the vital force of the body, it’s natal life-energy comes alive, and is moved by spirit. So if you are seeking to take the next steps in your life, awakening the natural child within you, and freeing yourself for fuller, deeper, richer expression, then please join us. Soma-drama work is a WBF process of following the wisdom of the body, through attention to and awareness of all of the sensations, movements, energies and impulses that arise. Playing itself out thus is the experiential practice of learning to embody, express and enact outwardly what the body holds inwardly, i.e. to perform the felt sensing. Not only is this process healing and transformational, it is fun! Together we will create a sacred circle, a theater of the spirit-body, in which we will each have the opportunity- in solo Focusing, in dyads, and in combinations of larger groups- to be active participants in playing out together our body’s inner dramas. And we may discover, as I have, that these dramas are not just personal, but also universal, ancestral and communal. So as we open to and unfold our body’s own life-story, we also connect with the Great Spirit, the divine play of the gods, and the restoration of our natural child- a spirit of joy and connection- a return to wholeness and unity of being. Our guide into the other world, our shaman, is the phenomenal body itself- one that calls us to a space of depths, of interconnection and of purpose, beyond what we already know or have yet lived. You discover a deeper source, a continual fount of energy and information.

We all experience an internal theater of inner dramas and characters that “inhabit” our personal world. Soma- drama work allows our internal theater to be “played out” in imaginal space, in physical space, and/or in interactive space with others. It includes both the deep inner reflective awareness of Focusing, along with letting the body expressively enact its felt sensing– i.e. to play itself out- allowing the energy, feeling qualities and potential new ways that have been trapped within them to be released and expressed. This way is directed by the body’s energy, the natal spirit that comes alive when given an opportunity for free, creative and expressive enacting. The body shows us its story and history, as well as its yearning for more life. Thus, all of our body’s sensations, symptoms and reactions carry within them a message, potential energy that when entered, and enacted, awakens and releases its energy and power, reveals its hidden meanings, as it unfolds the sacred dimensions of the spirit-body, the life-soul.

In this gathering, I will be presenting and guiding us through the WBF soma-drama process. We will be invoking the spirit of play, of Eros, to create a “play space,” a “theater of the living body,” that enables us to safely and playfully experience the awakening of our life-force and creative energy. The performative model of soma-drama is one that encourages us to play it out. All felt sensing is a field of energy, of vibrancies, tonalities, sensualities, as well as the body’s potential energy for movement and expressive action. Thus, in order to harness this deeper dimension of felt sensing requires whole body engagement, with the same energy, devotion and spirit as the child at play. Additionally, there will be time set aside for others to present or share something in the later afternoons and evening- as an outgrowth of what emerges in your process, as a creative expression of your soul, and a gift to our community.

The retreat will include: guided attunements & meditations to enhance Grounded Presence, and Wholebody Awareness; awakening energy & inner directed movement; immersing more deeply in the body’s inner life; emerging into embodied expression & interaction. There will be: break-outs into dyads (and other small groups); individual WBF demos; whole group processes; and soma-dramas, in which different people embody and play out (imaginatively and/or physically) some aspect of the Focuser’s inner world. Through connecting with the whole body, we activate a larger awareness and sensitive attuning to the movement of spirit through the living body, flowing within us, between us and around us. This transformational process enables us to participate in the healing of ourselves, the healing of each other and the healing of the world. When the body lives in greater harmony and loving alignment with our True Nature, all else falls into its right place.
